2008 Fox Youth HC Jersey

2008 Fox Honda 180 Pants

2008 Fox Youth 180 Pants

BACK BELT: Ben’s back was getting a little sore. For additional support we got a FOX back brace ($23).

He was now pretty well protected but this was still only the beginning...

NEW HELMET: When he needed a new helmet we got him a nice FOX Tracer helmet on clearance for $50 (year end close-out, good deals at end of model year). This Helmet was a great deal and much nicer than the HJC. This will be his last youth (cheap) helmet. The Tracer has been replaced with the even better FOX V1 YOUTH helmet  ($110). NICE!!!

Note: There’s some stuff called “helmet fresh” that removes odor from helmets. I’ll give more info when I can get it.

NEW SUIT: He got a set of FOX Vertigo jersey and pants (just like Ricky’s, really nice).

NEW BOOTS: Feet GROW! When it was time for new boots Ben wanted to try ALPINESTAR Tech 6’s ($199). Really nice boots. Easy to fasten buckles. Out grew again! Yikes!

ROOST 2: He also went with an EVS REVO ($45) under jersey roost protector. He likes it because it goes under the jersey and makes him looks like a pro rider. I’d still prefer a hard shell roost protector with better shoulder protection like the Thor for kids.

ELBOW PADS 2: We got some really nice EVS elbow pads that were a easier to put on than the FOX pads because they were larger.

JERSEY TRANSFER: I got an iron on transfer set to put his name on his jersey.

GLOVES: He has gotten several new pairs of FOX Dirtpaw gloves, the latest being some black 2009’s. Note: Gloves don’t last forever. Not just because of growing hands, they just get skanky over time.

When we bought my son his bike we got him the basic riding gear that we  would be necessary for basic protection. As he rode more we realized he needed a little extra gear to be truly protected. Also because kids grow so fast they need new stuff pretty often. Fortunately youth gear is cheaper than adult gear. The pictures to the right shows Ben in his latest gear. Sporty!

Check out more new gear in the Gift Guide

WE STARTED WITH:

BOOTS: FOX Tracker($80).

These were a great starter boot, but kid’s feet grow fast. Buy a couple of sizes LARGER than current shoe size. A good basic boot for the little guys.

SOCKS: FOX Fri Motocross Socks ($12).

HELMET: HJC Youth Helmet ($85).

A good starter helmet, all the basics at a good price. Not as nice as a FOX helmet.

SUIT: FOX Jersey, Pants and Gloves.

The Basics. There are entry level combos and even the higher level stuff for kids isn’t too expensive. Note: Youth jerseys are different than adults, they don’t have the same elbow padding and reinforcements.

GOGGLES: Oakley XS O Frame ($30)

(and tear-offs). Nice goggles. Smith’s are good and even Pro Frame makes a youth goggle. Tear-offs may be hard to find for some youth goggles.

THE RIDING GEAR & APPAREL A KID NEEDS TO BE FULLY PROTECTED...AND LOOK GOOD

THEN WE ADDED:

CHEST PROTECTOR: After he got a bar end in his chest we got him a THOR roost protector.

KNEE PADS: After he landed on his knee we got him some FOX knee/shin pads.

ELBOW PADS: After he landed on his elbow we got him some elbow FOX elbow pads.

NECK COLLAR: To be safe we got an EVS neck collar. We are now looking at the EVS Evolution Youth Collar. It’s similar to a Leatt Brace.
