The stock Honda CRF50 shift lever is really not suited for motocross at all. The rubber tip spins making it hard to shift and when it gets wet it’s even worse. Also because the tip is fixed it bends very easily. We found a really nice all aluminum unit with a knurled spring loaded tip that works MUCH better.
NEW SHIFT LEVER: CLASSIC HONDA
I got a nice Classic Honda shift lever ($20) and I can’t for the life of me remember where I got it from! I’ve tried searchin’ the net but no luck. Stay tuned, I’ll try to find my old invoice and post info if I find it. In the mean time there are many, many levers out there for the CRF50 that are very similar but cost a little more. Some are aluminum, some are steel like the IMS. Do a Google search for “CRF50 shift lever” and see what comes up. There are also +1 inch levers like the BBR and IMS below. They are one inch longer than the stock lever and are good if you feel a little extra room to get your boot under the lever might be helpful.
Installing the lever is pretty straight forward. Loosen the bolt on the stock part and wiggle it off or use a wooden pry bar if it’s stuck. Push on the new one (use a hammer and a piece of wood if it’s tuff) and tighten down the bolt.
For such a small amount of money this made a HUGE difference in Ben’s shifting. The boot has a much better grip on the shifter tip and it doesn’t bend in a fall.
